Hans teaches Liesel to read using these books and teaches Liesel how to write by practicing writing by using paint on the basement walls downstairs. She later steals another book at a Nazi book-burning rally in the town's main square. He begins the story with the colors of his three meetings with Liesel, the book thief white, black, and red and combines these to form the Nazi flag, which hangs over the story like the colors of the sky.

The first book that Liesel reads is the one she stole from the cemetery. When he takes a soul, Death remembers the color of the sky to distract himself from his grim work. Each night, to distract her from her dreams, Hans tells her stories and teaches her how to read. With the help of her foster father (Hans), he soon begins to teach her how to read, which encourages her to continue her book thievery. At the beginning of the novel when Liesel is at the cemetery for her younger brother’s burial, she finds a book called, The Gravedigger's Handbook, which is her first act of book thievery. On the train ride to Molching with her mother, Liesel's younger brother, Werner, dies which leaves her traumatized, experiencing nightmares about him for months. Liesel is a nine-year-old girl, who was given up by her mother to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the small town of Molching in 1939, shortly before World War II. The Book Thief, takes place in 1939, in Nazi Germany, during the historical time period of the Holocaust.
